In 1950 the United Nations granted Italy trusteeship of a portion of what is now Somalia. Italy struck this attractive copper 1 Centesimo for what was known as Italian Somaliland. Italy granted Somalia independence in 1960.
This copper coin features the head of an elephant on the front.
The back has legends and dates in both Italian and Arabic. To make sure nobody would forget who is in charge the name of the mint, “ROMA” is spelled out in large letters on the back.
Though the coin is over 50 years old, it still retains its original red copper color.
