FROLICKING WHALE PORPOISES
POLAND ANNUAL NATIVE WILDLIFE SERIES
2004 2 ZLOTYCH BRASS ALLOY COMMEMORATIVE COIN UNCIRCULATED
Poland annually issues an attractive 2 Zloty coin that features native wildlife. The purpose of the series is to present species of animals endangered by developing civilization. These animal coins have been a hit with collectors.
The 2004 issue features frolicking whale porpoises.
Also shown on the front of this coin is a map of the Baltic Sea off the coast of poland, which is a natural habitat of the animals. The legend MORSWIN phocoena phocoena is the scientific (binomial Latin genus and species) name for the harbor porpoise.
Are these Dolphins in the Baltic sea? Not exactly. However, one of the smallest kinds of whales – the harbor porpoise – still can be found in Polish coastal waters. Its population is dangerously decreasing. To save the harbor porpoise from extinction a research center to breed these mammals is to be built in Poland.
The harbor porpoise is one of the smallest kinds of whales, only reaching sizes up to 2 meters (6.5 feet) and can weight up to 90 kg (199 lb). They are most often found in coastal waters, where their lives are endangered by fishing nets.
Back of coin shows an image of the Crowned White Eagle, established as the state Emblem of the Republic of Poland; the Eagle’s legs are flanked by the white and red national flag; the notation of the year of issue, 2004, under the Eagle; an inscription, 2 Zt, below the year; an inscription, RZECZPOSPOLITA POLSKA, on top in the surround.
This coin is struck in standard finish, in(CuAl5Zn5Snl), a brass alloy, and at 27 mm in diameter is larger than a USA quarter which has a diameter of 24.26 mm.
