Maui, the second largest of the Hawaiian Islands has long been popular with tourists because of its gorgeous scenery, beautiful tropical beaches and numerous cultural activities. Each year, the Maui Chamber of Commerce issued a trade dollar that is good in trade at participating merchants throughout the island during the year that it is issued. Most of the coins were kept as souvenirs rather being turned in for redemption at the end of the year, which helped raise funds for educational projects on the island. Over the years the series became increasing popular with collectors.

For 2018, the subject shown on the front is a humpback whale and a cliff diver as well as another familiar scene, Black Rock in Kaanapali, one of Maui’s most often visited natural landmarks.  The front reads “MAUI, NO KA OI, 2018.”

The ancient Hawaiians called Black Rock in Kaanapali Pu’u Keka’a and chose it as the jumping off place to join the spirits of their ancestors.  Nowadays, to honor this ancient ritual, a lone diver climbs the rock, lights the tiki  torch, and dives into the ocean every evening as the sun sets.  The 2018 Maui Trade Dollar also features its trademark sunburst, a featured element on every Maui Trade Dollar to date, which is a perfect reflection of the sunny Kaanapali Coast.

The 2018 Maui Trade Dollar features a new updated design on the back.  Six stars are located on the left and right sides of the surround.  This indicates the 2018 coin is part of Series 6, the Heritage Series, featuring the natural landmarks of Maui.  This 2018 Maui Trade Dollar is the second coin in the Maui Trade Dollar Series 6 Collection (2017-2021), the Heritage Series.  The surround also includes names of major cities, towns, villages, and areas in Maui.  The coin no longer has a face value.  The center of the back shows an outline of the map of Maui and reads “MAUI TRADE DOLLAR SINCE 1992.”
