Front of card shows the Three Magi Riding Camels guided by the Star of Bethlehem. Noteworthy, the beautiful, unique and detailed heptagonal IOM Christmas Coin with the Steamship Travel Scene facing up on the front side of the card represents the Star of Bethlehem. The bottom of the front reads “Christmas Greetings”.
The artist who designed this Christmas card considered the Three Magi Riding to Bethlehem to be the original Christmas Travel Scene.
The coin pictures another Christmas Travel Scene from the 1800’s when people journeyed by steamship to visit family for Christmas. The idea behind this coin-card combination is that it was the coming of Jesus that remains the essence of the Christmas Season. It was the coming of Jesus that motivates all our activities for this Holiday. This includes travel so that we can worship together with loved ones.
The left inside of the card shows the Queen Elizabeth II side of the coin.
The right inside has “Seasons Greetings” written in nine different languages. There is plenty of room inside for you to write your own Christmas message should you decide to send this as an actual Christmas card.
Background For Isle Of Mann Coins:
A dependency of the British Crown since 1765, the Isle of Man is situated in the Irish Sea. It is midway between England, Scotland and Ireland. IOM has the oldest parliament in the world in continuous existence (since 979) and was the first country anywhere to give women the vote (in 1881). This Independent State has a long history, distinctive language and culture, and many proud traditions.
Manx residents used coinage intermittently from the Middle Ages onwards and regularly from 1679 to 1841. IOM revived coinage gain in the 1960s and it now issues both circulating coins and collectors’ versions. The Isle of Man has established an enviable reputation for innovation combined with technical excellence. Notable achievements include the World’s first circulation base-metal pound coin (1979), the only seven sided coin with an edge inscription, the first coin inscribed in Braille, the World’s first bi-metal coin in gold and titanium and the first Christmas coins. Such coins as the platinum Noble, the gold Angel and the award-winning Penny Black Crown have placed the Isle of Man in the forefront of contemporary numismatics.
