Martin Luther King Jr. was an American Christian minister and activist.  Importantly, he became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the civil rights movement from 1955 until his death in 1968.  Further, King was born in Atlanta, Georgia.  Notably, King is best known for advancing civil rights through nonviolence and civil disobedience.  Moreover,  his Christian beliefs and the nonviolent activism of Mahatma Gandhi were his inspirations.  Noteworthy, on October 14, 1964, King won the Nobel Peace Prize.  He won for combating racial inequality through nonviolent resistance.  Finally, James Earl Ray fatally shot King at 6:01 p.m., April 4, 1968. 

Strikingly, King’s main legacy was to secure progress on civil rights in the U.S.  Indeed, just days after King’s slaying, Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1968.  Title VIII of the Act, commonly known as the Fair Housing Act, prohibited discrimination in housing and housing-related transactions on the basis of race, religion, or national origin.
