Background Info For PJP II And The Catholic Church In Sierra Leone:
The Catholic Church in Sierra Leone has approximately 150,000 members and has played a great part in the charitable work that has been desperately needed since peace spread through the county. Noteworthy, Pope John Paul II helped to bring about this peace by personally appealing to the rebels to cease their activities. PJPII invited the Honorable Vice President, Mr. Solomon Berewa, to travel to Rome to take part in celebrations marking the 25th anniversary of his Ascendancy to the Papacy.
Background Info For Stations Of The Cross:
The Stations of the Cross depict 14 events in the Passion of Jesus Christ, beginning with the condemnation of Jesus to death and ending with His body being laid in a tomb. The pious practice of praying the Stations of the Cross originated in medieval Europe when pilgrims were unable to visit the Holy Land, so instead “visited” these Holy places through prayer.
St. Francis of Assisi, the founder of the Franciscan order, authored Stations of the Cross that popularized the devotion throughout the world. Today, you’ll find Stations of the Cross in almost every Catholic Church. Particularly, Catholics pray this devotion on Lenten Fridays, but it is available throughout the year for meditation and reflection.
To provide a version of this devotion more closely aligned with the biblical accounts, Pope John Paul II introduced a new form of devotion, called the Scriptural Way of the Cross, on Good Friday 1991. He celebrated that form many times but not exclusively at the Colosseum in Italy, using the following sequence (as published by the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops):
1- Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane;
2- Jesus’ betrayal by Judas and his arrest;
3- Jesus’ condemnation by the Sanhedrin;
4- Jesus’ denial by Peter;
5- Jesus’ judgment by Pilate;
6- Jesus is scourged and crowned with thorns;
7- Jesus takes up his cross;
8- Jesus receives help by Simon of Cyrene to carry his cross;
9- Jesus meets the women of Jerusalem;
10- Jesus is crucified;
11- Jesus promises his kingdom to the repentant thief;
12- Jesus entrusts Mary and John to each other;
13- Jesus dies on the cross; and
14- Jesus is laid in the tomb.
