Under Pope John Paul II, the Vatican created new, innovative and impressive coin designs every year.  1999 was no exception.  The 1999 year of mintage commemorates the 70th Anniversary of the Vatican City.

This coin was minted by the Vatican in honor of both Pope John Paul II and Jesus Christ, who witnessed and commanded concern for the poor.  Pope John Paul II was known for following Jesus Christ’s example by his valiant and tireless pastoral love for people, especially the poor -even when he could barely walk, speak or appear outwardly beautiful.

Front of coin shows beautiful profile of Pope John Paul II facing right and is inscribed “JOANNES PAVLVS II P.M. ANXXI MCMXCIX.”  “JOANNES PAVLVS” is Latin for John Paul.  “P.M.” stands for Pontificus Maximus which means Pope in Latin.  Next, the year is indicated using Roman numerals as both the twenty-first year of Pope John Paul II’s Papacy and as 1999.

The reverse shows Jesus Christ with his halo amongst the poor and is inscribed “CITTA DEL VATICANO  L.200” which indicates that this is a Vatican Coin in the denomination of 200 Lire.  On the right middle is the mintage mark, “R,” signifying that this coin was minted in Rome.

This shiny brass coin measures about 7/8 inch diameter, the size of a USA Quarter.
