In late December 2003, the Grand National Assembly of Turkey passed a law that allowed for the removal of six zeroes from the lira, and the creation of a new currency. It was introduced on 1 January 2005, replacing the previous lira (which remained valid in circulation until the end of 2005) at a rate of 1 second lira (ISO 4217 code “TRY”) = 1,000,000 first lira (ISO 4217 code “TRL”). With the revaluation of the Turkish lira, the Romanian leu (also revalued in July 2005) briefly became the world’s least valued currency unit.
In the transitional period between 1 January 2005 and 31 December 2008, the second lira was officially called Yeni Türk Liras (New Turkish lira). It was officially abbreviated “YTL” and subdivided into 100 new kuru (yeni kuru). With effect from 1 January 2009, the “new” was removed from the second lira, its official name becoming just “lira” again, abbreviated “TL”.
Turkey is one of the most popular nesting sites for loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta Carettas) along the Mediterranean. Because of this, loggerhead sea turtles have a special place in the heart of Turkey.
Every year in early summer, loggerhead sea turtles come to lay their eggs on the beaches of Turkey where they themselves hatched. They nest between 50-150 eggs by digging. After hatching approximately two months later, baby turtles begin to walk towards to the sea. Their trek is filled with danger. Baby turtles begin life alone, but nature has equipped them with the knowledge of how to survive to reach the sea. However, it is not enough to reach the sea for survival. Only one turtle of every 1000 babies can reach puberty.
Caretta Caretta sea turtles visit almost 20 beaches in Turkey. The major nesting areas of the Caretta Caretta sea turtles in Turkey are:
Belek, Side, Kumluca, Cirali, Tekirova, Patara, Kale, Demirtas, Kizilot, Kas (Antalya)
Anamur, Davultepe, Goksu Delta, Alata, Kazanli, Gazipasa (Mersin), Samandag (Hatay), Marmaris, Dalaman, Dalyan (Iztuzu Beach), Fethiye, Ekincik (Mugla), Yumurtalik, Akyatan (Adana), Kusadasi (Aydin).
If you find yourself having a holiday in Turkey, then take the chance to go to these beaches and see for yourself why these areas are marvelous places for the Caretta Caretta sea turtles to live.
For these reasons, Turkey decided to commemorate the loggerhead sea turtle on this coin.
