The sinking of the RMS Titanic is arguably history’s most famous maritime tragedy. The call “Iceberg, straight ahead” received the reply “Thank You” from the bridge. Shortly before midnight on April 14, 1912, the steamship RMS Titanic struck an iceberg on her starboard side on her maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York, and sank in the North Atlantic, with a loss of over 1,500 lives. At the time, the Titanic was the largest moving object on the planet and was touted as being unsinkable.
Today, a century after disaster struck during her maiden voyage, the public still can’t get enough of her story.
The drama of the sinking ship became the subject of many books, technical literature and speculation. Numerous movies have been made about the tragic event, spreading the myth of the Titanic around the world. In September 1985, oceanographer Robert Ballard located the wreck of the Titanic at a latitude 41°44′ North and a longitude of 49°55′ West, in a depth of 12,500 ft or 3,840 m.
The front of this coin shows the titanic sinking and is inscribed: “RMS TITANIC” at the top and “$5” at the bottom. RMS stands for Royal Mail Ship, a designation which dates back to 1840. It is the ship prefix used for seagoing vessels that carry mail under contract to the British Royal Mail.
The back of this coin shows the Liberian Arms which features a ship and the legend “THE LOVE OF LIBERTY BROUGHT US HERE REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA “. The top is inscribed: “REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA”; the center is inscribed: “1998”; and the bottom is inscribed: “5 DOLLARS”.
Beautiful reeded edge.
