Doctors may better manage three common disorders that are on the rise worldwide—attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), memory loss, and cardiovascular disease.  Significantly, research and development in “medical foods” is growing and contributing new tools for doctors to treat these disorders. Noteworthy, VAYA Pharma, one of the newest BioPark tenants, is developing medical foods that may hold the key to better management of these disorders.

 VAYA’s three products—Vayarin for ADHD, Vayacog for early memory loss, and Vayarol for hypertriglyceridemia—are “medical foods.” Noteworthy, Vaya designed them to bridge the gap between nutrition and supplements (which can prevent disease among healthy people) and pharmaceuticals (which directly treat disease). The FDA regulates medical foods. Further, Vaya manufactured these products under cGMP and designed them to be physician supervision-based methods to help manage diseases. Importantly, VAYA’s medical food products deliver omega-3 fatty acids using a molecule called phosphatidylserine, an essential component of cell membranes. Further, these molecules are not available in a typical diet and studies show that they to correct lipid imbalances in the body, improve social behavior, reduce family disruption for children with ADHD, and improve early-stage memory loss among adults.

Three medical foods that Vaya marketed for the treatment of attention deficit disorder (ADHD or ADD) symptoms including poor concentration and memory — namely Vayarin, Vayarin Plus, and Vayacog — will no longer be sold in the United States. Notably, his discontinuation follows a statement from parent company VAYA and its corporate partner, Enzymotec, released earlier this week. VAYA cited a “lack of alignment” with the Enzymotec business strategy, and said the company is shifting its primary focus to becoming an ingredient-supplier to other companies instead of engaging with consumers directly.
